may's book, The Wave, was a great read. it was the true story of a 1960's high school history classroom, the teacher wanting the kids to more fully understand the nazi experience of world war two. he set up an experiment, creating a club in the school called the wave. they adhered to strength through discipline, strength through community, strength through action. like a wave, this movement soon took over the school, and under the pretext of unity, a lot of chaos ensues. sensing it getting out of control, the teacher calls a meeting, telling the students the real leader of the wave will speak to them. the meeting becomes a frenzied rally that is cut absolutely short when on the screen flashes the picture of hitler. the last image the book leaves is a boy named robert who is devestated by the wave's collapse. he went from being the most nerdy, picked on kid in the class, to a strong leader of the wave, to nothing again.
there was a lot of fun discussion of this book at the meeting. thanks for all who attended! the book for next month promises to be great!
